FIND THE RIGHT WAY TO SAVE

One tool, a few ways to catch a video.

Start with a direct download. If the player needs a different approach, choose a recording mode.

01

Your first choice

Video download

Save a detected MP4 file or HLS stream without recording the whole playback. If the source offers several qualities, choose the balance of detail and file size that suits you.

Best for finished videos with a download option.

02

Catch it as it happens

Live stream saving

Save a supported live HLS stream while it broadcasts. Stop and save when you have the part you need. The source decides how much earlier footage is still available.

Best for live broadcasts you have permission to save.

03

When there is no direct link

Stream Capture

Capture the video data a compatible player loads during playback. Keep the source video playing and visible, then stop the capture and download your recording.

Best for compatible streaming players without a detected download.

04

A playback recording fallback

Tab Record

Record the playing video and its available audio when Stream Capture does not work. This mode records the video in the page, rather than your entire desktop. Playback and browser support affect the result.

Best for short recordings from compatible video players.

Support varies by website and player. Protected video and YouTube are not supported. Save only videos you own or have permission to download. Compare the modes →

SMALL TIPS. BETTER RESULTS.

Before you press record.

A little preparation helps, especially for longer videos.

Get help with a problem →
  • Try a short clip first.

Check the saved picture and sound before committing to a long session.

  • Keep the source visible.

Some players reduce quality in the background. Leave the video playing and the recording tab open.

  • Make room for the finished file.

Temporary files and conversion can need extra disk space. Lower available quality can help with download size.

  • Wait until the save finishes.

Check your browser’s Downloads panel before closing or refreshing the StreamCatcher tab.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A few things worth knowing.

Still stuck? Send feedback with the mode you tried and what happened.

Is StreamCatcher free?

Yes. The extension and companion web app are free to use. You do not need a StreamCatcher account to download or record a supported video.

Which browsers and devices can I use?

Install the extension in desktop Chrome or Microsoft Edge using the store links above. The download and recording workflow needs the extension; opening this website on a phone does not provide the same functionality.

Does it work on every website?

No. Support depends on how a website delivers its video and the capabilities of your browser. DRM-protected video is not supported, and some sites are restricted. The extension does not support YouTube. Recording is not a way to remove content protection.

Why is no video detected?

Start the video, wait a few seconds, and reopen the extension. Check that detection is not paused and that the extension has access to the site. If you just installed or updated it, reload the source page. Some players only work with a recording mode; others are unsupported.

Which mode should I try first?

Use a detected download first. For a compatible player without a direct download, try Stream Capture, then Tab Record as a fallback. Test a short clip and check its picture and sound before starting a long recording.

Can I save an entire live broadcast?

Only the content the source still makes available can be saved. Start early and leave the download running. StreamCatcher cannot recover a part of the broadcast that the source has already removed.

Where does my video go?

Video processing happens in your browser. Downloads and some recordings use temporary browser storage before you save the finished file. Your browser controls the final save location, usually its Downloads folder. The website also uses analytics and error diagnostics; see the Privacy Policy for details.

Why does saving a recording take extra time?

StreamCatcher needs to assemble the recording. Stream Capture may also convert it for easier playback in other apps. Conversion depends on your device and can create a larger file. Keep the recording tab open until your browser finishes downloading; the original capture is available if conversion cannot finish.

Why are there different quality options?

They come from the source video. A higher resolution usually gives more detail and a larger download; a lower one can save space. StreamCatcher cannot add detail that the source does not provide.
